With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), concerns around data privacy and trust are becoming paramount societal issues. To address these concerns, CelcomDigi, a leading Malaysian telecommunications company, co-hosted the second annual Trust Circle forum with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The forum brought together over 40 leaders and experts from various industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance, to discuss strategies for promoting responsible data practices and safeguarding digital privacy in the age of AI.

AI and the Risk to Data Protection

Experts highlighted the potential risks AI poses to data protection, with concerns ranging from unintended bias in algorithms to the vast amount of data collected by AI systems. The forum emphasized the need for organizations to prioritize future-proofing their privacy programs and ensuring responsible use of AI.

Building Trust Through Transparency

The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer* was referenced, indicating that the public trusts technology companies to ethically introduce new technologies like AI. However, leaders must actively address emerging ethical concerns.

Datuk Idham Nawawi, CEO of CelcomDigi, stressed the importance of strong data governance and transparency in building trust. He stated, “Transparency in data management and risk mitigation are crucial for building trust as we adopt AI.”

Collaboration is Key

The Trust Circle forum serves as a platform for collaboration between industry leaders, regulators, and academics. This multi-stakeholder approach is seen as essential for establishing best practices and raising the bar for data protection in a world increasingly reliant on AI.

The forum’s expansion from 20 organizations in 2023 to over 40 in 2024 highlights the growing commitment to building a secure and trustworthy digital future for all.

Building Public Confidence

By fostering collaboration and open dialogue, the Trust Circle aims to ensure responsible AI development and use. This, in turn, will build public confidence and trust in the digital future.
