Race Towards Net Zero – Charles Lin
The Kaohsiung Smart City movement is pioneered by the current Deputy Mayor, Charles Lin. He had specially mentioned how a city must adapt and change in order to fulfil the needs of its citizens. The interview session saw the demonstration of a “super app” that consolidates essential government services for citizens. For example, people can access healthcare services and manage their consolidated personal medical records. Similarly, farmers can use the app to connect with agricultural researchers and get advice. That is just the surface layer whereby citizens could “interact” with, there are still plenty of untold services that could be improved.
As highlighted, Kaohsiung contributes roughly 20% of Taiwan’s total carbon emissions due to its heavy industry. Hence, one of the other key goals highlighted at this year’s Kaohsiung Smart City & Summit Expo is achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Charles believes that infrastructure development is crucial for reaching this target. The city is now embracing green energy and recycled water. With the help of technology, it aims to transform into a high-tech, sustainable city.
