LG has made the G6 official, the next iteration of LG’s G-series smartphone has been given a new breath of life with a complete makeover. The new G6 now comes with an all-new design as well as larger display.

LG G6 Design

Last year, LG attempted at the modular smartphone with the LG G5 and LG Friends. The G5 comes with a detachable chin module that grants access to the removable battery unit. The implementation, however, is poorly executed where swapping modules require removing the battery, hence a reboot of the device.

This year, LG drops the modular support and introduces a new approach in designing the G6. The new generation G6 focuses on the usability of the phone as the hardware and performance war has come to mature. Dropping the modular support also means that LG is capable of making the G6 a phone that supports IP68 water & dust resistance.

The all-aluminium body is sandwiched in between 2 pieces of gorilla glass at the front and back. Best of all, the camera module sits flush with the rear panel. Finally, the phone can stay flat on the table. The volume button also has been moved from the back to the side. Power button remained at the rear where it doubles as the fingerprint scanner.

The main attraction of the G6 is no other than its uniquely proportioned 5.7-inch FullVision display. The display ratio of 18:9 makes the phone felt like having a 6-inch plus display while keeping the device footprint small. The display comes with the resolution of 2880 * 1440, supports HDR 10 as well as Dolby Vision. All those makes the G6 a device with a superb cinematic viewing experience.

The camera remained the same dual-camera configuration, pairing a standard angle lens with a wide angle lens. Both camera sensors are now the same 13-megapixel Sony IMX258 Exmor RS. Compared to the G5’s 16-megapixel + 8-megapixel configuration, the image quality and transition on the G6 should be better than ever.

The G6 only supports Contrast AF & Phase Detection AF.  This is a definitely a step back in the autofocus department with the exclusion of laser autofocus.
