Review – OPPO F5: For the Selfie Lovers
Build Quality & Design
New Phone, Same Design
OPPO has been recycling this design for god knows how many times. Apart from the new placement of the fingerprint scanner at the back panel, the rest of the design has been around since the F1s and R9s.
OPPO designers probably spent most of their time figuring out how to beautify the antenna lines I guess?
Then again, maintaining the same design especially the rounded edges make the phone a joy to hold in the hands.
Besides, since the price of tempered glass has become stupidly cheap nowadays, OPPO also had tempered glass screen protector pre-applied to the display. Basically, you just take the phone and start using it without having to look for a third-party tempered glass screen protectors.
Rear Fingerprint Scanner
The fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back to accommodate the bigger display at the front. Like it or not, the change is here and frankly speaking, the scanner is extremely responsive.
Wait, Micro USB?
We’re at the end of 2017, and we still have new phones released with a micro USB port. Some people just want to see the world burn, don’t they? On the bright side, at least OPPO has not gone full copy pasta mode by removing the audio jack. The single channel speaker is loud but lacks any means of creating good sounding tunes.
Subpar Display
The OPPO F5 may not be the first OPPO phone to sport a display with 18:9 aspect ratio. That title goes to the OPPO R11s & R11s Plus which never made it to the Malaysian shore. Nonetheless, the added screen real estate definitely benefits OPPO customers who seek for the same experience.
It has a Full HD+ 2160 x 1080p display resolution for the crisp details. The LTPS IPS display offers great viewing angle albeit the colour accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. Having experienced various types of screen technologies raging from TFT, IPS to OLED, the OPPO F5’s IPS feels a lot dull compared to other IPS LCDs.
True Dual SIM + microSD
Taking out the SIM tray and we are greeted with dedicated dual SIM and micro SD slot. Good job for ditching the hybrid SIM tray.
