Samsung Announces the Galaxy Z Fold6

3 min read

Earlier this year, Samsung is proud to announce the release of Galaxy AI in conjunction with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 family. While some dismissed the development in artificial intelligence to be superficial, one thing we cannot deny is the information technology field is an ever changing playground. We have seen how Generative AI is capable of doing some crazy stuff depending on the LLM and the prompts. Therefore, just a few months later, Samsung has once again upgraded their Galaxy AI with new features and Quality-of-Life improvements. The features to be launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 series and trickle down to other supported Samsung Galaxy mobiles.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6

A Familiar Design with a Touch of Class

Samsung’s sticking with the winning formula for the Fold6’s overall design. It takes cues from the S24 Ultra with squared-off edges, offering a modern and sophisticated look. While slightly wider and shorter than its predecessor, the difference is subtle. In my opinion, this form factor remains superior to other foldable phones on the market.

The cover screen gets a minor upgrade too, now measuring 1mm wider for a more comfortable viewing experience. Surprisingly lightweight, the Fold6 weighs in at only 239 grams, nearly matching the S24 Ultra.

Color Options and a Luxe Feel

The Fold6 comes in a variety of colors to suit your taste, with three base options: Silver Shadow, Navy, and Pink. For those who prefer classic tones, online exclusive colors like crafted black and white are also available.

But the real star of the show here is the texture! Both the back panel and the hinge cover boast a luxurious velvet-like texture that extends even to the hinge itself. It’s a delight to hold and adds a touch of elegance to the phone.

Power Under the Hood

The Fold6 packs the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, along with a significantly larger 1.6x vapor chamber compared to the previous generation. This promises a better performance and hopefully tame the erratic behaviour of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Camera and Battery: A Case of Deja Vu

Samsung has opted to reuse the existing camera sensors, which feels like a missed opportunity for an upgrade. Similarly, the battery capacity and charging speed remain unchanged at 4,400mAh and previous generation speeds respectively.

However, the Fold6 does join its foldable sibling, the Flip6, in achieving an IP48 dust and water resistance rating, a welcome addition for added peace of mind.

Overall Impressions

The Galaxy Z Fold6 offers a refined design with a focus on comfort and aesthetics. The new texture is a delightful touch, and the lighter weight is a big plus. While the reused camera sensors and lack of significant battery improvement are minor letdowns, the Fold6 remains a powerful contender in the foldable phone market.
