Samsung The Serif Smart TV – Who is it for?

If you still remember Samsung The Frame, it was a  state of the art TV that sports both technology and design. The Frame, other than being a standard TV, it also plays the role of a picture frame which inspires the naming of the TV. Today we will not be talking about The Frame, but instead, its brand-new sister product – The Serif.

The Serif

If you’re familiar with typeface families, you’ll definitely know the difference between Serif and Sans Serif. The chassis of the TV is a direct resemblance to the capital letter “I” and you can see this the top and bottom features on the end-stroke. Some might be asking why Samsung has come up with this kind of design where it literally throws the conventional look out of the window. You see, that’s the exact reason why. For those who are really into the home and interior design, perhaps they have gotten used to the boring black rectangle design on a TV. What if there exists a TV that also stands out from the rest.

The Serif can be used either with the four metal rod stands or by placing it directly on a TV console. Unfortunately, due to the design, you won’t be able to wall mount this TV. So you have to be sure with what you’re planning to do with the TV when you’re getting it. At the back is a huge piece of textured plastic cover that hides away all the cables that go through behind the TV. I am not trying to justify Samsung’s decision to sacrifice the convenience over for aesthetics, the reason is fairly straight-forward – The Serif is designed for its aesthetics.

The QLED panel once again is looking amazing in person. Samsung has gotten the TV certified with 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut which is the standard for the film and cinema industry. Colour reproduction is splendid and the contrast ratio just about right. Even though some might complain why Samsung never bothered with OLED panels but I personally think the use case is not that suitable. Since we won’t be leaving the phone OLED screen on for long hours, the burn-in problem is not that prominent with smartphones. This is not the case when it comes to TVs which we might be watching the same channel for long hours which will contribute to the OLED burn-in especially for the channel watermark.

Meanwhile, the operating system we’re having on The Serif is Tizen OS. The integration between the TV as well as Samsung SmartThings is remarkable. You can pretty much control every Smart peripheral in your house through the TV remote control. On that side note, it is worthy to mention the TV’s Intelligence Mode whereby it analyzes the content you’re playing and applies the best settings to suit with it. Personally, I’m not a big fan of such feature as I have my own personal preference when it comes to all the settings. Then again, it is nice to know this TV will get this covered especially for those who’re not tech-savvy.

Who is it for?

Samsung The Serif 55-inch is now available in Malaysia at the official retail price of RM6,479. Sure enough, some consumers would be questioning the reason behind purchasing this TV when there are plenty of other alternative options available in the market. If you think this is ugly and shouldn’t be made in the first place, you can actually opt for the conventional designed Samsung Q60 which uses the same QLED technology in a standard chassis.  Honestly, this TV place all of its emphasis on its design while the QLED technology is just happen to be Samsung’s best offering for it. This is a TV for those who want to make a statement through their home’s interior design.
