User Experience: Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE

4 min read

In the realm of Android tablets, Samsung has long been a dominant force. The Samsung Galaxy Tab series tablets offer a wide range of device options that range from the entry Tab A series to the flagship Galaxy Tab S series. The recent introduction of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE further exemplifies the “for the fans” philosophy by offering a well-rounded tablet experience with a superior build that caters to the needs of the average user. Most importantly, it fits right into the current price gap between the Galaxy Tab A and Galaxy Tab S series.

For those seeking a tablet for casual use, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE emerges as an ideal choice. As a “Fan Edition” device, it retains the essential Samsung experience while making a few strategic compromises. In this review, I will be sharing my personal experience using this device as my primary tablet for work as well as entertainment.

What comes in the box:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE
  • S Pen
  • USB-C to C cable
  • SIM tray ejector

Unsurprisingly, the Tab S9 FE does not come with a charger which ultimately contributes to a thinner package. I don’t mind if they don’t include the charger because I’m more of a fan of using a multi-charger like the one offered by UGREEN:

It only takes up one wall socket and you can charge multiple devices at the same time.

One thing I was hoping Samsung includes is a simple protective case, even a clear case would do just fine

Build & Design

The Galaxy Tab S9 FE shares the same sleek design as its bigger brother Tab S9 series.

Encased in an aluminium chassis with a minimalist Gray colourway, the build includes thoughtful details like a three-pin connection point for keyboards, a fingerprint sensor, and a magnetic area for the included S Pen.

For those who require a larger display, the Tab S9 FE+ is also available with a 12.4-inch display and a 10090 mAh battery. For comparison, the standard-sized Tab S9 FE has a 10.9-inch display and an 8000 mAh battery.

Display

Speaking of the display. One compromise made in the Tab S9 FE is the screen, which, while large at 10.9 inches and features a 90 Hz refresh rate, employs a TFT LCD panel. While LCD panels are serviceable, they lack the same black-light performance as OLED displays. Despite this, the quality is still acceptable as the use of an AMOLED panel will impact the final pricing of the tablet.

Software & Performance

The Galaxy Tab S9 FE runs on One UI 5 based on Android 13 out of the box, with an imminent upgrade to One UI 6. Generally, those who are familiar with Samsung Galaxy phones will feel right at home with the tablet interface. The tablet’s internal configuration includes 6 GB/8 GB RAM and 128 GB/256 GB storage, powered by an Exynos 1380 processor. While not top-tier, the Tab S9 FE performs well for everyday use, with occasional stutters. Our review sample of 8GB + 256GB works just as well for either native or Samsung DeX mode.

The Samsung DeX mode is a productivity powerhouse that enables users to perform multiple tasks at the same time.

Battery

The Tab S9 FE boasts an 8,000 mAh battery, providing approximately 16 hours of use, depending on usage patterns. The relatively fast charging time ensures that the tablet remains adequately powered throughout the day.

Conclusion

Despite starting at RM2099 for the base WiFi 6GB+128GB model, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE impresses with its performance and functionality. The TFT LCD display is a compromise, but Samsung manages to deliver a well-rounded device that caters to the needs of most users. While it may not excel in video editing or graphically intense gaming, the tablet proves more than sufficient for everyday tasks.
